Minimalist Matrix Is Trending: Here’s How We Thrifted The Look

By

If you've scrolled through your feed lately and wondered why everyone looks like they just stepped off the set of The Matrix, we got you. Whether it’s Hailey, Kendall, Bella—or the mysterious man serving straight looks outside your local—the minimalist matrix aesthetic is having a moment.

From sleek, sculptural silhouettes to floor-sweeping coats, tech-savvy tailoring, and the teeniest, tiniest oblong sunglasses, this era of tech-noir meets quiet luxury is less latex and more leather. The best part? You don’t need an A-lister income to get in on it.

Eager to jump in and serve off-duty model all season long—but with dollars leftover for Euro summer—our Junior Commercial Content Producer, Maisie and Design Lead Eric put their thrifting skills to the test.

And where better to turn than to the online designer second-hand platform Vinnies Finds for your Matrix-worthy pieces? This new game-changer in the world of unique and curated shopping just dropped. And with hundreds of pieces you won’t find anywhere else, this is your chance to put our tips to good use and have a crack at channelling Carrie-Anne Moss and Keanu Reeves circa 1999.

It’s All In The Coat

“When I stumbled across a vintage Armani jacket on the Vinnies Finds site, I knew my Matrix fashion fantasy was about to come to fruition,” says Maisie.

Meet the hero of any minimalist matrix look, and honestly, any outfit for the chilly season: the leather jacket. The ultimate outer layer? Locked and loaded.

When you hit Vinnies Finds, stick true to size to nail that structured feel, and be sure to opt for search terms like faux leather, heavy wool, and structured trench. Bonus points if you can land something that swishes dramatically when you walk.

Go Monochrome Or Go Home

“Tailoring your search to darker colours is my top tip for when it comes to securing your Neo-inspired fit, plus it’s a massive timesaver,” says Eric.

In favour of the coolest computer hackers in the game, black is the obvious choice when it comes to colour palette. Charcoal, gunmetal, and deep navy bring the same moody energy, and will suffice for the simulation. The key to the code is to stick to one tone throughout, because less is always more.

Tasteful Tailoring

“I went for a transeasonal short look, but I’m on the hunt for the perfect pair of tailored trousers to make this look work over the colder months,” says Maisie.

Becoming a muse of The Matrix is all about scanning the racks and scrolling the site for all things sleek, fitted, and fine-edged. This is a strict case of tailored pants, waistcoats, and well-shaped blazers.

The men’s section is always the best place to start for structured pieces with a dystopian edge. And if it’s not the right fit size-wise, you can justify getting them tailored for a better fit with all the coin you just saved buying second-hand.

Cyberpunk Editions

“I was so stoked to cop these Matrix-inspired sunnies with a yellow lens. Honestly, I think they’re the hero piece of this entire look,” Eric says.

Tiny sunglasses that just cover the eyes and minimalist silver hardware are your new best friend. Accessories are the make-or-break of this cyber-turned-potential fashion crime, so get to know this section at your local op shop or online second-hand store.

Finally, in the cyberpunk department, like Neo, you’re going to need to secure some combat boots to ensure you’re well equipped for pounding the pavement with your new head-turning look.

Textures Over Patterns

“I'm all about colourful patterns, but when it comes to nailing the Matrix look, less is most definitely more. Here, texture is key.” says Maisie.

When it comes to nailing your minimalist matrix look, avoid patterns and move your focus towards texture. Along with leather, denim, wool, and neoprene can be layered up to help you achieve the desired clean, architectural lines. With that, you can walk like you’ve just hacked the simulation and save the bold prints for another trend cycle.

To nail the minimalist matrix look just in time for the colder months—and secure a range of never-seen-before pieces—check out the new Vinnies Finds site and shop their full range.
